âIâm just on my way to Dylanâs,â Coral lied down the phone to Iris, trying her best to sound as perky as possible, but the nerves were beginning to take over. She stared out of the top deck bus window absentmindedly at the unfamiliar surroundings in absolute awe, yet a slither of anxiousness was slowly creeping up her spine.
âI donât know why you tolerate that idiot,â Iris said into Coralâs ear through the phone, crackling sounds making their way through in unison as she got further into the countryside.
âMe neither sometimes,â Coral sighed. âIâll be fine, though; heâll be normal once Iâve buttered him up and batted my eyelashes, then I can ask him my questions. He canât complain that Iâve not paid him any attention either; Iâve been a busy girl, and he has to remember that. The world doesnât revolve around him,â Coral said, a sad feeling washing over her. âAnyway, Iâll call or message when I can.â
As Coral hung up and put her phone back in her pocket, she felt a sudden pang of guilt, but then a shiver ran down her spine, and she remembered why she was doing what she was doing, but the cold feeling remained as if someone had just poured ice down her back as a reminder. The guilt was from both lying to Iris and not making any time for Dylan recently. But then again, he wasnât exactly a top priority right now, just as she wasnât to him unless he needed the appetite in his pants fulfilling. She was still angry about the pocketing of the horrific coloured knickers situation, but she would deal with that later; there were more important things going on in her world right now.
The bus began to slow down, and Coralâs stomach turned and twisted, making her almost want to throw up, but she swallowed it back down and began her descent down the steps and out onto the quiet country road, taking in the view and the balmy morning weather before her. A line of cottages on the opposite side of the road, a diner and a few shops further down were all her eyes allowed her to see from where she stood, and suddenly, she felt scared and very alone. I shouldnât have come out here on my own, Coral thought, looking around, but nothing familiarised itself with her.
She was as far from Dylanâs flat as she was from her own home. It hadnât taken her long to find the bus that would get her to the next village over from hers, but it didnât make her feel any more confident about the situation. For all she knew, the person she was about to come face to face with could be the reason her mum took her own life, or even the hands behind her life being taken away. This stranger was most likely her last hope of finally bolting shut the door on the past that haunted her so much.
Coral knew deep
